So, we all know a hurricane is headed towards the Southern Great Basin. The Great Basin soils are desert soil that will not readily absorb water, it will almost all run off immediately and start collecting in low-lying areas.

If these guys have stuff they want to keep from the rest of us, they are going to be moving it, NOW. Especially if its underground. Keep an eye on the roads in Southern California, as they may be moving stuff to higher ground, in an emergency.

This area is the bottom of dry lake bed, that soon will not be so dry!

Here is a relief map of the basin containing both Edwards AFB and Lockheed Skunkworks at Palmdale. Notice that it is a flat area contained by mountains on basically all sides, with no real drainage. Edwards is at its low point at 800ft altitude. If you are in any of these towns, you might want to pack a go-bag.

This isn’t a lot of rain to a lot of us, but consider the soil is not a sponge, but a parking lot. It’s all got to go somewhere, and it will be coming off of both mountain ranges simultaneously, and the drainage between Death Valley and Mt. Whitney. This could be a big one, and Edwards AFB is at the low point.

Rain Accumulation at Edwards AFB

The area to the North, towards Ridgecrest is an even bigger concern:

Broader area rain accumulation

That is the home of the Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake. It might become a lake again. Watch the roads. They might be moving stuff.
