Generals Leland S. Stranathan, Andrew P. O’Meara and ambassador Robert Mc. Clintock visit the Espora Naval Air Base (Argentina) in the middle of one of the largest UFO waves in the history of this country, may 1962.

Newspaper, dated May 23 1962:

“Guests of Puerto Belgrano. Senior U.S. Naval Chiefs will visit the base.”

“They toured the Espora Base.” “Senior U.S. naval chiefs toured Puerto Belgrano.”

“U.S. ambassador visits Bahia Blanca.”

“Ambassador. The representative of the United States in this country, Robert Mc. Clintock, spoke with our reporter. The interview was taken shortly after his arrival at the Comandante Espora Naval Air Base.”

They launched these types of balloons (I forgot what they are called in English):

“They also observed maneuvers of a flying object.” “Looking for explanations.” “These balloons are not “UFOs”.

“Confirmation. Moments before the arrival of the American mission to the Comandante Espora Naval Air Base, we spoke yesterday with Rear Admiral Eladio Vazquez, commander of the Puerto Belgrano Naval Area. Both he and the second commander, Captain Aldo Molinari, confirmed having seen the day before yesterday at approximately 7:40 pm the luminous object “as captured by the photographic machine”, and similar to the information given in our yesterday’s edition. It is, without a doubt, a qualified confirmation of our news.”

The photo mentioned by the officers is the following one, taken by Miguel Thomé, photographer of the newspaper “La Nueva Provincia” on May 21, 1962, which was the cover of the next day’s edition of that same newspaper:

“A luminous object that crossed the sky of Bahia Blanca yesterday was photographed.”

“Marines and journalists observed the presumed place of descent of the “UFO”.

“Analysis: There is no radioactive matter.At the last moment we were informed about the result of the analysis performed by several professionals of the Universidad Nacional del Sur, to whom we delivered yesterday samples of the soil and the whitish layer superimposed and adhered that we had extracted from the place where two “UFOs” had landed. The analysis was negative for the presence of radioactive matter, and the elements found in the soil are indicated as calcium and potassium carbonate. In short, there is no composition strange to what we know, so it must be interpreted as stains caused by some material commonly used in the field.”

“A naval commission arrived yesterday In the middle of yesterday morning, a commission arrived in our city, a commission appointed by the Secretary of the Navy with the purpose of gathering certain information about the appearance of luminous objects in our sky. This group was chaired by the medical frigate captain Dr. Constantino Nuñez, currently professor of Nuclear Warfare and Defense at the Naval War College. The commission brought with them all the necessary instruments to carry out the pertinent investigations. At 3:00 pm they moved by helicopter to km 35 of the national route 35 where according to authentic references -that we indicated in the last edition- three “UFOs” were seen on May 12 and then arrived at km 72 of the same route, where at the same time two “UFOs” were seen according to the information that we provided separately. The naval commission will perform various tasks specific to their mission, returning today to the Federal Capital.”

October 1962, the Air Attaché of the Argentine Embassy in Washington D.C, provides information on a series of UFO sightings close to the Espora Naval Air Base on May 1962. Constantino Nuñez is also mentioned as well as the work he did at the site.
