Genuine question regarding disclosure

This is a genuine question, in no way am I trying to put any individual or group down.

Given the history of government and other forms of centralized power throughout human history. Why would we wait for government-led disclosure?!?

I can’t find the logic in this. If we just take the U.S. government for instance, an entire encyclopedia could be filled with just a years worth of lies. This isn’t cynicism, and I’m not an anarchist. I just don’t understand why so many people/groups put so much stock in government-led disclosure.
