I’ve taken the wrenching journey from strongly skeptical a few weeks ago, to now being a solid 50/50 that all this is really happening. My belief before was that despite the growing ubiquity of cameras and surveillance, nothing new or compelling has shown up. That’s obviously not true. It’s a super intense form of cognitive dissonance and a very uncomfortable place to be. Even worse, we might never know the truth for sure.

And I know that I would get some relief by having someone to talk with about it. But of course, you have to mind your credibility, and not mess up relationships. I have perhaps 1-2 friends who I think I might be able to “warm up” and have a real discussion. But I know I’d have to take an oblique approach at first so they don’t go “oh no my friend has gone crazy”

My personal model right now is to begin with talking about the Fermi Paradox, and perhaps get into which hypotheses there are, and then if they’re engaged, get into discussing weights or prior probabilities I’d assign to each of them. In this model, my prior probability of a “Prime Directive” type scenario has gone way up, but it looks like it has a much less benevolent form than depicted in Star Trek.

I feel we as a community really need to be careful of our mental health and our credibility, and that happens on an interpersonal level IRL. What are your approaches and advice, and experience on this?
