I kind of get Neil deGrasse Tyson

NDT gets a lot of hate on here, rightfully so. He’s a scientist who always seem to be mocking the UFO topic, laughing at the people that take it seriously. Why not embrace the unknown and try figuring out the actual truth? I guess shouting that it’s all nonsense it easier.

But… I was thinking about it yesterday after watching the second episode of the TMZ documentary and it clicked. Think about it: you’re a scientist with a certain specialization. Something you’ve been studying for all you’re life. Everything you know and everything you have done in your field is based on knowledge you have gathered throughout your lifetime. All of the sudden something is looming over the horizon that has the potential to completely shatter all of that. All of your hours studying, experimenting, discussing, attending lectures, conferences, reading and writing reports and papers… all of that goes out the window.

Maybe that’s why there’s a lot of pushback from the scientific community. Pushback from people that are simply scared that their life’s work could be rendered worthless. Their knowledge obsolete. All that they’ve ever know? False. All that they have ever done? For nothing. It’s easier to make yourself believe that it’s all nonsense because if that’s the case, then why would you need to take it seriously? Aliens? Flying saucers? Ha! Good one…
