First time this happens for me. To describe it shortly. On the 27 of Feb around 2 AM it was very cold in the city I live, usually when it is cold, the sky is very clear.
I went to have a look on the window as I couldn’t get that much sleep, I like to glaze up and far into the sky. I live in a city approx. 20 km south of Brussels.
Out of the blue, from very very high in the sky, further than civil airplanes fly, a bright light appeared, it moved and had the brightness of a shooting star, a strong one, a very bright white light. It did not appear to reduce its brightness while descending.
I was just mesmerized and amazed, “what a bright & pretty shooting star – need to make a wish”. The trajectory was totally vertical from where my window is.
But then something weird happened, right just before reaching the tree lines, the white light turned into red spinning lights horizontally and the thing moved to the right for some amount of time, 5-6 seconds and then to the left for more seconds.
The trees behind it disappeared are maybe around 1km away from where I am, it is in the direction of my normal running track. I can’t say how far the object was, I do know those trees occluded it and it just disappeared behind them.
I question myself, why didn’t I film it, my phone was in my pocket – but I was totally stunned by how “pretty the shooting star is” and made me remember happy moments of my childhood, when watching shooting stars and making wishes was something we did in vacation at our grandparents during summer. It made me smile.
There are things that I question myself now
Why was the trajectory so perfectly vertical ? Why did the brightness stay almost the same ? Why did the thing turn into red dots / lines / balls like a bearing, when it got close to ground and appearing to spin right to left ? Why did it make that travel of first to the right and then to the left as it was looking for something ? Why was I stuck and mesmerized in my mind, the idea of filming it not even crossing through my head, just “What a pretty shooting star!” ? Not even when it turned into red lights! I did film the area, maybe 10 seconds after it disappeared behind the tree lines. I could use the film on my iphone to only know more or less when it happened with a margin of a minute or so. Now that I think of it, it descended fast, really really fast considering it came from above where airlines usually fly (the nearest Zaventem airport is nearby – 15 km, I see planes all the time). It traversed the entire sky vertically in no more than 2 – 3 seconds.
