We had a scheduled power putage hit us at 8, so I went outside to have a look at the sky minus the light pollution, and do so at least once a week on clear nights.
After a few minutes, I saw what I thought was a star start moving erratically, so I called my wife who saw the same. She then spotted two other “stars” that also moved extremely erratically.
The first one was white, as was the first one my wife spotted. They seemed to cross paths with each other a few times before going off in opposite directions. Whatever these were we’re moving insanely fast with no apparent logic to their movements.
A few minutes later, my wife saw a third object, but this one was glowing red and was much faster than the others. It sped overhead, moving from West to East before coming to a stop, also moving without any concern for a traditional trajectory, stuttering along. After it stopped, it stayed in place and we went inside.
So far, here’s what I know.
It’s not a plane. We do have a local airport but these things were way too high.
It isn’t a Starlink satellite. I’ve watched a lot of Starlink videos but none were as erratic as this, not did their speed change at will
Not a drone. Again, the erratic behaviour took drones off the table, as well as the vast differences in speed.
No conclusions I’ve come to are written in stone, and I’ll be happy to be wrong so long as there is an explanation.
If any fellow South Africans saw this, please let me know.
Edit: I’m in the West Rand of Joburg, Roodepoort area
