The Miracle of the Sun (Portuguese: Milagre do Sol), also known as the Miracle of Fátima*, is a series of events reported to have occurred miraculously on 13 October 1917, attended by a large crowd who had gathered in* Fátima, Portugal in response to a prophecy made by three shepherd children, Lúcia Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The prophecy was that the Virgin Mary (referred to as Our Lady of Fátima), would appear and perform miracles on that date. Newspapers published testimony from witnesses who said that they had seen extraordinary solar activity, such as the Sun appearing to “dance” or zig-zag in the sky, careen towards the Earth, or emit multicolored light and radiant colors. According to these reports, the event lasted approximately ten minutes.

In my experience, this incredible event is often missed as a major UFO event, because it was widely accepted as a religious event. Of course the debunkers of religion dismissed it. But a careful review of the known information shows that even people at a distance saw the event take place but not over their own heads. It was something lower in the sky at a distance over the crowd.
I was raised Catholic and was taught about this event from a very young age. It is a very famous miracle, according to church teachings. But when I became interested in UFOs and later reviewed this event, it was obviously a major UFO event. The sun didn’t dance in the sky, swirl and emit rays or come zooming down towards the crowd, but a UFO intended to be interpreted as a religious event – a miracle – might well explain that.
