I have had a theory for quite some time that is actually quite simple on an anthropological level.
Aliens are the new gods. Nothing more, but that is no small thing.
It is simply the latest iteration of human gods, which have always existed and as we see at every (long) step of human history have been changing and evolving in forms and concepts. Added to all this absurd boom of “aliens exist but we do not prove anything, nor show you anything, we just fill your heads with nonsense for decades. There you have it.”
We have gone from animals and inexplicable events (for the humans of the time) to anthropomorphic figures half animal half humanoid, which were the cause of what the Bear God and the Storm Goddess used to do; to totally human entities but in the form of a spiritual deity that has controlled the designs of humanity, but that are still a very old concept (2000 years at best); and now it’s time for aliens, which “coincidentally” are technological prodigies (in the age of technology, coincidentally).
New religious iteration, that the traditional gods are losing too much strength and we have to invent something else.
And I say that because I’m betting money that they’re never going to prove absolute nothing, nor are we going to see a single alien. But all the chatter and the “its fucking nothing” is going to increase.
Our grandchildren will pray to the grays and voila.
