The portal flash appears to have been added to the video after the fact, and does not discredit the video. It only makes things more complicated.

The flash effect is the only part of the video that uses a colour (magenta) outside of the videos thermal colour palette (rainbow: red hot to blue cold). It’s a “huge” oversight by whoever added the flash effect, and not at all in line with the insane attention to detail contained within the rest of the video.

I think it’s likely that, even if the footage of the plane/orbs aren’t real, the “portal” flash was added by someone else after the fact.

Prove it?

The supposed MH370 videos use a “rainbow” thermal colour palette. Red represents the hottest part of the image, blue the coldest. With cyan, green, yellow and orange representing the temperatures between those extremes. Here’s an example of common thermal palettes (the MH370 video uses something like the first palette):

When using thermal colour palette, no colours other than those in the palette will ever be displayed.

However, during the four frames of the portal flash—and ONLY during those four frames—colours (h284) outside of the video’s thermal palette (h0 <-> h269) are displayed:

This is a (kinda amateurish) oversight by whoever composited the portal; there is no magenta in any other frames of the video. It is NOT a colour used by the thermal palette; the coldest parts are represented by a blue/purple.

I suspect some pretty basic, lazy blending modes were utilised to get this affect:

And I think whilst compositing using these methods, the artist sampled some of the “coldest” parts of the image, which are blue/purple, and thought whatever they ended up with was close enough. But it ain’t: whoever composited the “portal” effect did not understand how thermal colour palettes worked and screwed it up.

On the flip side, whoever or whatever created the rest of the video, absolutely understood how thermal palettes worked.

Was the portal effect just a an oversight by the VFX team?


The VFX pipeline would work something like this:

The 3D assets, like the plane, clouds, etc. are individually rendered in greyscale, representing hot/cold -> The rendered assets are composited together into one shot -> Effects like noise/portals are added to the shot -> The final composite greyscale “hot/cold” shot is colour mapped to a thermal palette.

In other words, the colour palette mistake would never happen because the colour mapping process is automatic and done last.

In order to achieve colours outside of the thermal palette, someone would have had to manually add this bizzare mistake to 4 frames of the video after all this mind-bending attention to detail had been paid.

Like, why? It just doesn’t make any sense.

In conclusion

When people talk about VFX artists creating this video, mistakes like compositing using assets from an existing, public library and using slightly incorrect colour mapping are the sorts of mistakes you’d expect to see (see the skinny bob debunking for reference).

In my opinion, the insane attention to detail—or more specifically—a lack of errors throughout the rest of the video is not the sort of thing VFX artists would likely achieve, even with a large budget, lots of time (which they didn’t have), even if they’re informed by subject matter experts. Errors would be made. Lots of little ones. Like the thermal palette problem.

So here’s the questions I’m left with:

If the video is real, why would VFX artists have added the effect (and screwed it up)?

If the video is fake, why sabotage your perfect hoax with a compositing error?

And more to the point, what’s more likely?

Final thought: maybe this explains why in this video the portal appears “cold” despite clearly emitting light on the satellite video. Light = heat = not black/blue. Does this VFX art cover up a flash or something else?
