What to Believe about UFOs Based on the Evidence

I have been studying the subject of UFOs since 1984. Due to a random assignment for a college English paper, I read The Hynek UFO report and a variety of related information. I expected to find pure fluff. But instead I was blown away by what I was learning. If only a fraction of this is true, I would wonder aloud to my wife, then it should be on the evening news every night!!! This is the biggest story in history even if only one UFO is an alien craft.

I remember the first time I read the NSA report for the Iraq 1976 event and thought for sure it was a fake. If this were even close to being true, it would be on the evening news as the biggest story in the world! A few years later, I found the original NSA document in the NSA archives myself. It really did happen.

It has been a seemingly endless roller-coaster ride filled with moments of profound shock, followed by moments of confusion, disappointment, disillusionment, or confirmation of things I never imagined might be true. And slowly, over time one gains perspective. So here is mine.

I have never allowed myself to completely BELIEVE anything. I always tried to remain open to all claims no matter how ridiculous they may sound at first, because any true alien presence defies expectations. We have no way to know what could and could not be true. So, unless you have seen an alien yourself, don’t force a choice! When something is easily and convincingly debunked, then accept that. If something cannot be debunked, then no matter how silly it might seem, at least keep an open mind. But this is the key: You don’t have to decide what to believe. Just file it away for future reference. That is how to keep your sanity and the key to maintaining perspective. If you force a choice to believe or not, then you become committed to that choice. If you never decide what you believe, you will never be forced to abandon your beliefs. But this applies to both belief and denial. Denialism can be as irrational as being a true believer when you don’t really know.

Debunking claims are often unsupportable and even weaker than UFO anecdotes. Debunkers often look for any out whether it is logical or not. Just because debunkers will say something is debunked, that means very little. It depends on the debunkers, their logic, and the facts of the case. There is a natural tendency to accept any apparent debunking even if it doesn’t explain the case. Often, specific facts are cherry picked by debunkers while other key facts are ignored. So don’t don’t be lulled into false cynicism.

I see a lot of people here who have been at this a relatively short period of time, who get very frustrated and disillusioned with the pace of progress. But that is the nature of the beast. We are trying to filter out the 5% signal from the 95% noise. And while disclosure does seem to be at hand, that too may require decades to fully play out. So relax and accept that we may never know the entire truth.

I am often reminded the Arthur C. Clarke novel, Childhood’s End. In that story, the alien crafts appeared over major cities all over the earth, but the aliens didn’t reveal themselves for another fifty years. If there really is a non-human presence on earth, it isn’t hard to imagine things might really work this way.
