This post is a bit of a megathread of serious media coverage across the last few weeks, but also a bit of a statement for those who often lament about the mockery or deafening silence this topic generally deals with in the media.
A UFO story is currently dominating the front-page of Fox News as I write this post.
I personally started noticing the shift towards a more serious tone a few months ago, where we had a flurry of outlets starting to post semi-regular opinion pieces following the watershed moment that was the Gruschifying (thanks for that new term, News Nation) of the topic and subsequent public hearing.
You had places like The Hill, The Daily Beast and Politico all starting to follow the topic more and reporting on more minor developments, such as the launch of the AARO website. To me, that wave of media culminated nicely with the ‘David Grusch is my hero of 2023’ piece from TDB rounding out the year.
Now in the first two weeks of January alone, we’ve had a tsunami of media coverage – both in the written / online heavyweights and across multiple cable and international TV news networks. Nearly all of it has been relatively neutral, if not positive towards the topic.
The news outlets still working with ridicule and X-Files music are being totally drowned out by well researched takes on the phenomenon that have now all started discussing Grusch by name in almost every pieces that touches on the topic. The tone is changing, the conversation is changing. Hopefully some of you find this encouraging as we move into 2024.
