Should global powers collaborate to develop advanced weaponry capable of defending the planet against a hypothetical mass invasion by malevolent NHI?

I assume this idea has already been discussed perhaps decades ago by top US military intelligence analysts, but I’m curious as to whether or not any highly advanced technological countermeasures are being developed to defend our planet against a sudden attack by non-human intelligences with potentially inter-dimensional properties?

Could nuclear or laser weapon systems effectively neutralize them or will we have to resort to arming home owners with super soakers filled with holy water?
