For those unfamiliar with Dr. Vallee’s work, he has long stated his theory that everything from UFO’s, to past “mythical” creatures such as faries, to modern day cryptids such as Bigfoot may all be the same phenomenon manifesting in different ways. His work while in my opinion brilliant, can by it’s nature, occassionly be quite dense, esoteric and occassionly hard to get your head around, a long standing tradition when it comes to French intellectuals as anyone who has studied any French philosophy would agree I’m sure.
I watched an interview with Dr. Vallee recently and he drew a fantastic analogy for the central claim of his work that I thought was just brilliant in its simplicity and I just wanted to share it for any admirers of his work out there who haven’t heard it, or even people who are new to this subject and maybe haven’t come across his work yet. Simply put I just thought it was just an excellent analogy. I’m paraphrasing slightly, but here goes.
Imagine we build a time machine and we bring someone from the past to the present. This person does not understand the concept of a cinema as cinemas do not yet exist in their time. We bring them to a cinema. Before we enter we stand outside and wait for people to come out and we then talk to them. The first person comes out and we ask them what they saw inside the cinema.
They say they saw a monster that was killing people, they’re terrified and they won’t sleep tonight, but they managed to kill the monster in the end. That person leaves and the next person comes out. We ask the same question. They say they saw a man and a woman start off on the wrong foot with each other, but gradually fall in love and live happily ever after. On to the next person, same deal. They say they saw a person fight a losing battle against an evil adversary until ultimately they managed to defeat the evil and become a hero.
The time traveller is in disbelief that so much is going on inside this building. He demads we bring him in immediately so he can see whats happening for himself. We enter the theater room and his disbelief is warranted because he sees no trace of a dead monster, a gushing couple, or a triumphant hero, all he sees is rows of chairs and a large white canvass attached to a wall.
He immediately turns around and says I can’t see any of those things, theres no evidence for any of them, so all those people were clearly lying. You ask him to turn around and face the opposite wall. You explain that hidden from view in a room behind that wall there is a little box that makes all these things appear on the white canvass behind him. It gets turned on and they appear, its turned off and they disappear without a trace. This to him essentially sounds like magic and does not fit into his unserstanding of reality. He dismisses it and says, no I think those people were just lying
