In principle, there are two reports from two people about the same event that do not completely match. Because these are two people who were in the same location reporting the same thing, you could say that this is automatically a lie. But let’s investigate a little:
Rodrigo
He says he remembers little of the facts due to time. He was at his friend’s house, Vitor, who told him that he heard from his father that someone from Unicamp said that the creature was in a sealed laboratory at Unicamp. So, since his friend lived close to Unicamp, the two went to try to find the place.
It was about dusk, a rainy day, and the electricity had even gone out at Unicamp. They went until they found something that caught their attention: a laboratory that was sealed. It was possible to see the seal through the glass door. The light in the area was on, due to the likely fact that there was a generator in that location. They also saw what appeared to be some organs, dissected animals.
Walking around the building they began to hear a buzzing sound similar to a bee buzzing, and noticed that although all the windows were locked, there was one partially open that allowed them to see if they climbed the grate. So Rodrigo decided to climb, and when he looked inside, despite it being dark, he noticed a creature moving inside a glass cage. Although, according to him, he did not see the creature’s face, the head was very disproportionate to the body and the creature was crouched in the same way as it appears in classical representations. You couldn’t notice the color or further details due to the darkness, but the creature’s silhouette closely resembled the traditional description.
He went down, spoke to his friend, Vitor, who also went up to see the creature, and pay close attention to this detail: he was really scared by what he saw and almost fell back. he says he “thinks” his friend Vitor saw the creature’s red eyes and that’s why he was scared. He uses his friend’s name, but he does it in a tone like “oh, I don’t remember exactly, but I think he saw it”, kind of protecting his friend.
Shortly afterwards, they both noticed the sound of sirens and ran to the car. A car with a giroflex on top comes at high speed to the place where they were and they fled as quickly as they could back to their friend Vitor’s house. They felt they were being chased but managed to escape.
Vitor
Vitor remembers the details much more. His interview is from 2015. He said he was at a party and his very influential father, a friend to everyone, was talking to the college director, who was drunk. Without realizing it, the director told Vitor’s father that there was a secret laboratory at Unicamp that the entrance was through an underground passage inside the Hospital das Clínicas and there was a creature inside. The laboratory was sealed.
The father told Vitor, thinking the director was joking. So Victor decided to go talk to the Director. To Vitor’s surprise, the director cut off the conversation and immediately changed the subject (like someone who has just realized he said more than he should have). That was why he decided to go look for the place.
He thinks that due to the rain and the blackout, supervision at that specific time was weak and this allowed them to go to college without identifying themselves. He decided to take a road further away from the center of Unicamp (which is huge just to put it into context) that had been built recently, in the middle of the woods. It was a deserted place.
They followed that road and walked. Until they arrived at a laboratory far away from Unicamp. What caught his attention was that it was sealed. Through the glass door they saw some strange things that looked like organs. There was also a message saying something like ” this place is closed. only people with such authorization have access here”
Walking around the building, what caught his attention was the noise of the generator and air conditioning in the last room. There was also a buzzing sound. The windows were welded shut, they couldn’t be opened, but the last window up there was slightly open. He thinks it’s for refrigeration.
So his friend, Rodrigo, decided to climb the railing to try to see, and he succeeded. But suddenly he got really scared and almost fell out of there, so according to Vitor words: “What did you see man??? OMG, I want to see that too” but then his friend started asking him to leave incessantly, that at home told everything, and it is understood between the lines that Vitor did not see the creature, only his friend Rodrigo.
Then he tells the same chase story but in more detail, including saying that he had to take a shortcut through the woods to lose them.
Then he asks his friend Rodrigo: “What did you see?”, and he says he saw a he saw a creature crouching inside a glass cage and that creature turned around and and when it looked at him, he saw the big red glowing eyes and was in shock. but an important detail, he says with certainty that his friend saw this, but he NEVER says his friend’s name (Rodrigo). We only know this now due to Rodrigo’s recent interview.
At the end of his story, he says something very strange at first when asked about his friend’s name: “Oh, I don’t remember his name exactly, it’s been a long time, but I’ll try to remember.” (But what kind of person forgets their friend’s name?)
Conclusion
I think that despite the huge divergence in the main point of the story, I think this is due to the fact that both are trying to transfer the responsibility of actually seeing the creature to their friend, perhaps for fear of suffering some threat or simply because of social stigma. They both do it, especially Vitor, in a way of trying to protect their friend at the same time. For example, Vitor said he didn’t remember his friend’s name. I had the impression that he used the figure of a friend who he could forget the name of, to tell his own story in a way that protected himself and his friend.
because despite this, the rest of the story is consistent overall. If it is to deliberately lie, why did they change just that essential part of who actually saw the creature?
A question that I’m sure will come up: but why didn’t they put soldiers to guard the place? Well, if you search for the place, which even has a curious name: EXPERIMENTAL Center for Medicine and Surgery, you will see that it is at one end of Unicamp, surrounded by bush, a hidden place, far from the movement. So I think it wouldn’t be cool to put soldiers to guard a place that almost no one went to, and even if they did, they wouldn’t imagine there was anything hidden inside. Putting soldiers to guard the place would be like shouting: “we are hiding ET here, come and see”. The less attention it draws and the less suspicious it is, the better. The two friends only found out because the director of the college said that it was close to the Hospital das Clínicas and that it was closed, so it was easy for them to associate. But if you look from the outside and without context, you would just see another ordinary building at Unicamp. It is interesting that the distance it is from the Hospital das Clínicas actually allows for the existence of an underground passage.
