Matt Ford claimed AARO’s explanation of the Eglin AFB UFO sighting over the Gulf of Mexico was completely implausible because it would need to carry a heavy battery. On the basis of some quick calculations, I find that 100 watts of LEDs could run for a few hours on a 2kg Li-ion battery, which could be carried in a very light balloon to 10,000 ft by about 7m3 of helium – plus or minus. So that doesn’t seem all that impossible. The bigger problem I see is that white LEDs have virtually no output below 1 µm wavelength and would not show up as luminous objects in a FLIR image like that which the AF has released. (FLIR works, according to Wikipedia, at 3 to 12 µm.) Any thoughts?
