One of the most frequently cited issues that skeptics bring up is “If Aliens are so advanced that they can travel across the galaxy to visit our planet, why do they crash here so often?”
I’m sure I’m not the first to think of this as a solution, but: what if the NHI that visit us are exclusively (or almost exclusively) AI, and they are not able to solve novel problems? One of the often cited shortcomings of AI technology is that, while it’s a fantastically speedy aggregator of human knowledge, it can’t actually innovate or invent something new. Yes, it can “create” works of art or suggest solutions for problems, but these are based upon the application of styles and knowledge which humans have pioneered.
What if this principle (or flaw) remains generally true with artificial intelligence? You can infuse it with smarter and smarter models, which will be great at the application of known solutions to problems, but cannot actually innovate new solutions to problems?
Thus, the AI that visits us may be like advanced probes from elsewhere — They have relatively incredible technology, but they are unable to come up with a solution to whatever shortcomings or design flaws that cause them to crash.
