After sending an email back in October last year I finally got something written back from Tammy Duckworth
Thank you for contacting me about Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs), previously referred to as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns on this important matter.
UAPs is a catch-all term to describe unexplainable events or objects detected in outer space, in the air, on land and in the sea, which is a more expansive term than the narrower word UFOs. Reports of such phenomena in the United States have been recorded since 1947. Congressional inquiries have increased significantly in recent years as increased reports of UAPs demanded a larger conversation about the implications for both national security and aviation safety, areas in which I have a keen interest. As a strong supporter of military readiness initiatives and an outspoken leader on aviation safety, I recognize the importance of monitoring these security developments. Congress has appropriately taken steps to improve public transparency around UAPs.
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 requires the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to publish an annual unclassified report on UAPs and created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in the U.S. Department of Defense. AARO is responsible for identifying UAPs that might pose a threat to national security and the operations of the U.S. Armed Forces and Federal agencies. The AARO launched a website in August 2023 to provide the public with information on UAPs and enable current and former U.S. Government employees, servicemembers and contractors with direct knowledge of UAPs to submit program and activity reports through a secure reporting system.
I appreciate hearing from my constituents – many of whom serve or have served our Nation – about national security concerns that are important to them. As your Senator, it is my duty to make you feel empowered and heard in consideration of important security decisions made in Congress. Many of my constituents have expressed concern about increased reports of UAPs. These phenomena could be a risk to aviation safety. Rest assured that I am closely monitoring this issue and will keep your thoughts in mind should relevant legislation come before the Senate for review.
Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue. If you would like more information on my work in the Senate, please visit my website at www.duckworth.senate.gov.
