Thank you for contacting my office regarding unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP). I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
Overall, I believe the government should be as transparent as possible with the American people—whether the topic be UAPs or other matters concerning the public. The American people have a right to information that helps them make informed decisions about their government and hold that government accountable. A UAP is any perceived aerial or anomalous phenomenon that cannot be immediately identified or explained. Over the last few years, public interest and media coverage over UAPs has been growing as more declassified information and intelligence reports are released by the federal government, detailing past reports and UAP encounters by members of our Armed Services. On July 26, 2023, the House Committee on Oversight held a hearing concerning UAPs and the potential national security implications associated with this phenomenon. Mr. David Grusch, a whistleblower and former intelligence officer for fourteen years in both the United States Air Force and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency was among the testifying witnesses. Mr. Grusch claims that the federal government is maintaining a highly secretive UAP recovery program possessing non-human craft and remains. Following these public claims, both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) have issued statements that there is no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial life. Like you, I believe whistleblowers like Mr. Grusch play a crucial role in holding our government accountable. While there is no evidence to corroborate Mr. Grusch’s claims, I believe whistleblowers should be able to come forward without fear of retaliation and be afforded due process like any other American. While I am not a member of the Senate Committee on Intelligence, where these matters would first be discussed in the United States Senate, my staff and I will continue to monitor subsequent reports that are released by our intelligence and security apparatus regarding UAPs. I will keep your comments in mind should Congress consider any legislation related to these affairs. Thank you for contacting me. It is an honor to serve as your U.S. Senator from Indiana. Please keep in touch with me on issues of concern to you. You can also follow me on Twitter or Facebook for real-time updates on my activities in the U.S. Senate. If I ever may be of service, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mike Braun U.S. Senator
