By their very nature, most forums create an inherent selection bias.
They will mostly become populated by users with a deeper interest in the subject than the general population.
Take any forum dedicated to a specific video game, for instance. Over time the field of engagement will filter down to those who either militantly support the game, and those who are similarly invested but in the negative, and take every opportunity to criticize the game or those who play it.
The same thing is probably going on in all of these subreddits. It attracts those who are passionate enough about the issue to join, read and comment. Their passion tends to the extreme in both skeptic and believer camps.
The average person doesn’t care enough to post on reddit topics, so we’re seeing a selection effect of die hards on both sides.
At least that’s my worthless suggestion.
