There has been a lot of discussion in this sub lately speculating on the involvement of private corporate interests in UFO research and reverse engineering (Battelle, Lockheed, etc.). While this is almost certainly true, and worthy of discussion, I haven’t seen too much consideration given to the possibility of involvement by the U.S. higher education system in this research, which I think is probable and an idea worth exploring.
Colleges and universities, after all, have historically been very closely tied to super-secret U.S. government research efforts. The human experimentation performed for MKUltra, for example, took place almost exclusively at colleges and universities around the country. Institutions of higher education have almost certainly played a role in highly-compartmentalized UFO research efforts, and this seems to have been overlooked.
If David Grusch’s whistleblower allegations are true—particularly the claim that the U.S. preserved the institutional framework and practices of secrecy developed during the Manhattan project and applied them to UFO research and recovery—I believe that the University of Chicago in particular has played a large, if not central role in both the research and coverup of the UFO topic.
The University of Chicago was involved in the Manhattan Project from the very beginning. Its campus was the site of the first-ever isolation of plutonium, and Manhattan Project personnel built the first-ever nuclear reactor under the football field. After WW2, the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory was folded into the Department of Energy as Argonne National Laboratory, which the University of Chicago still manages to this day (in fact, they manage a total of three national laboratories: Argonne, Fermilab, and the Marine Biological Laboratory).
Did the University of Chicago have any involvement in secret government projects following the Manhattan Project? Of course they did. Just off the top of my head, they collaborated with the U.S. State Department in educating the Chicago Boys, the architects of Chile’s fascist economy following the CIA-orchestrated coup that installed Augusto Pinochet.
Three of the seven members of the Robertson Panel, the group convened by the CIA and Air Force which officially recommended that UFOs be made the subject of ridicule to the public, came from the University of Chicago (Luis Alvarez and J. Allen Hynek were both double-alumni, and Thornton Page was on the faculty).
More recently, the University of Chicago has promoted materials research as a high institutional priority through the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. They’ve received HEAVY investment—to the tune of billions of dollars—from the Department of Energy and Boeing, weirdly enough, toward their quantum engineering efforts.
This is all circumstantial, of course, but given the University of Chicago’s involvement with the Manhattan Project, management of multiple National Laboratories, collaboration with the CIA, and current emphasis on materials research, I would be incredibly surprised if they are NOT currently or recently involved with UAP reverse-engineering efforts.
