Why would extraterrestrial vehicles have external lights?

I want to preface this by saying, first, I have had two encounters with “UFOs” or “UAPs,” or whatever the proper terminology is these days, and, second, purely from a statistical standpoint, it’s not possible for me to accept that we are alone in the universe. So I’m not fundamentally opposed to the existence of aliens, and I’m not opposed to the possibility of them visiting our planet.

That said… most UFO videos revolve around lights. Not all of them, but a large portion, maybe a majority, involve mysterious lights in the sky. One of my two experiences was with a large triangle with three lights. For the record, it made some sound, but very, very little, and it hovered in place very low almost directly above me at night in a small town in Tennessee in the early 2000s. Just to share. I think it’s pretty much guaranteed to be human, but it was a craft unlike anything I’ve ever seen. If I had to estimate a size, I’d say maybe 30′ across from corner to corner (…to corner).

But I digress.

What purpose would external lights serve on extraterrestrial spacecraft? They can’t use those lights to see the surface of a planet any better (they’re typically not nearly as bright as, say, the kind of spotlight a police helicopter uses, and even that’s only effective within a certain distance). And they, presumably, aren’t aware of our rules and regulations regarding aircraft lighting schemes.

So why would UFOs have lights? Has this been addressed at length and I’ve just missed that conversation somehow? Again, I’m not anti-UFO. I’m just a natural skeptic who enjoys critical thinking and open discussion. There could very well be some reason for it that I’m not thinking of, and I’d like to hear about it.

P.S. I feel comfortable posting this here because I’ve seen how critical and skeptical this community is with itself, and I admire the hell out of it. You guys do a great job of tearing the nonsense to shreds, and when I can’t find a reasonable explanation for a video in the comments somewhere, I genuinely start to think it might be aliens. The silver orb caught in the Middle East drone video, for example – that shit has me rethinking everything. So bring that same spirit to the comments here and you might just change my mind.
