I stumbled upon this very old post while searching Dugway proving ground. I had an experience when i was 17 that i misremembered as happening near area 51 lol but i was in the UT desert and upon finally checking a map, i now realize i was actually near the DPG. This was my experience:
I had been sent to a youth program called Outback wilderness therapy/camp in jan 2011. It was in the UT desert. We hiked all around the desert, made fire with sticks and rocks, lived in filth, and got therapy twice a week, it was great.
One day we hiked and made camp on this mountain ridge, on the other side of which was the Dugway proving ground. It was dusk, and i was lying halfway out of my tarp shelter, with my head and arms out. One the side where Dugway was, I saw what i, at the time, believed was a comet or meteor shoot across the sky, at close proximity. It was like a huge fire ball and it looked like it shot right across where the mountain edge met the sky. The mountain edge was maybe 100 yrds away. It looked super close, and It lit up the entire sky.
I was too far from the other campers and the staff had already taken my boots (they took our shoes each evening to discourage running away). I wasn’t about to wander off in one of the only few pairs of socks i got per week. When staff came back to give nightly meds, i was freaking out like omg what was that!! And they didn’t know what i was talking about. I told them about the meteor and I asked if they noticed the sky light up suddenly, and they said they hadn’t.
Literally the whole sky lit up. It was bright, orange/yellow light, like a fireball. It looked like fire. There also was no sound or impact felt.
