Location: Cottonwood, Arizona
Date of sighting: 4/7/2024
Time of sighting: First saw it at approximately 7pm, just after sunset (Sunset Today: 6:54 pm 280° West). Saw it a second time approximately 1-2 minutes later in about the same part of the sky.
Duration of sighting: I’d say less than 2 minutes in total.
Number of witnesses: I was driving alone in my car, so as far as I know, only me.
Description of sighting: I first noticed it as a distant point of light. It looked exactly like a star to me. I’m quite familiar with the night sky, I know how to identify planets, stars, aircraft, satellites, etc. The reason it stood out to me was because I shouldn’t be able to see any stars at that particular moment. It wasn’t quite dark enough yet, and even more convincingly, the sky was very cloudy. Like almost completely overcast. There was a solid cloud layer behind it from my perspective. I wanted to document the sky conditions in which I saw it, so I took 2 photos of the sky about 10 minutes later in the same direction as where I saw it, which was to the north-west. Link. First pic I wanted to include the sunset as reference. Second pic is to show the rest of the northerly sky. From my perspective it appeared in that dark band of cloud on the far right of the first pic, or on the left side of the 2nd pic.
Relative to my view out of my car windshield it was in the top 1/3rd of it. Comparing the brightness to stars, it was among the brightest of stars. Very noticeable in the sky. It also flickered just like a star would. What really stood out to me was when it faded away over the course of a few seconds. Either the light reduced in intensity until it wasn’t visible, or it ascended through the cloud layer, I’m not sure. However, I didn’t observe any obvious motion, so that makes me tend to think that it reduced intensity.
I was thoroughly perplexed at that point, so I kept looking toward where I saw it to see if it would reappear. It reappeared exactly like how it faded away but in reverse. It is hard for me to say if it moved or not between these appearances. I was driving and in-between these sightings I had made a left turn and traveled maybe 1 mile, so I didn’t have any good points of reference to tell if it moved. Again, no obvious movement, same star-like twinkling, same brightness, same part of the sky, same cloud condition. I would estimate that the amount of time from when it appeared this second time to when it faded away was 20-40 seconds. It again faded away like it did the first time. And despite watching the same area for awhile longer, I didn’t see it again.
Lastly, I should mention that I looked at the sky again just now. It is long after sunset and I still cannot see a single star because of the cloud cover.
I appreciate any explanations, but currently I have none other than UAP.
