Question about the veracity of the 19th century airship events

For those who have studied the topic, how confident are you that these are factual, historical events? It has come to my understanding that 19th century “news” were pretty lax on fact checking, and published a lot of sensationalist stories that were more or less pure fiction, essentially pulp adventure stories.
