Worried about Disinformation

Hey all, first time posting here and I just wanted to talk about a random thought I had. A leading theory in the community is that actors are actively running disinformation campaigns to discredit any truth and keep “most people” away from all of this. That got me thinking and speculating about stuff.

Consider for a moment you’re a bad actor. You want to somehow spread misinformation and make regular joes step back and keep a 10 foot pole between anything “alien”. You’ve tried all the old tricks but nothing is working. Suddenly you have an idea, take something that’s definitely terrestrial, blur it, and release it like it’s “alien”. Then, do everything in your power to convince the world it’s legit, like really dumb explanations for what it could be (swamp gas/a drone/etc), and let them all get debunked. The more of those crazy explanations are debunked, the more mainstream the video gets. Finally, the clip starts hitting major news outlets and sources both in America and around the world. Now you release the original high resolution footage.

Hundreds and thousands of UFO advocates would have been throwing their full weight behind this video, suddenly they look like fools. Anyone in the regular population who remotely gave a crap would suddenly laugh and double down that “UFO people are nut jobs”. The entire movement gets set back a decade and all it took was a blurry video.

This is a real possibility that worries me with every new bit of media that comes out. Especially recently with this whole Jellyfish thing, all of the debunks have been really simple to disprove as explanations. What do you all think?

TL;DR: disinformation campaigns are still out there, and there’s no reason they wouldn’t change and get more sophisticated over time
